Description Sequence Clinical Experience The ATEP requires the completion of a minimum of 64 hours of course work in the athletic training major and 800 hours of clinical education experience. The course work involves a six semester sequence beginning with the fall semester of admission into the program. This sequence is developed as a progression designed to incorporate all domains and objectives outlined in the Athletic Training Educational Competencies, culminating in HAT 458, Seminar in Athletic Training, which is taken during the final semester of program enrollment. Description [back to top]HAT 257 - Introduction to Athletic Training (3) - The study of current principles in the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Offered fall, spring and summer semesters. HAT 258 - Clinical in Athletic Training (1) - The study and practice of clinical skills in the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Directed observations under the guidance of BOC Certified Athletic Trainers. Offered spring semester. (students must be enrolled in this course during the semester of ATEP application) HAT 272 - First Aid, Safety and CPR (2) - Discussion and practice of skills and techniques in the emergency response to injuries and illnesses. Includes emergency assessment; first aid; cardiopulmonary resuscitation for infants, children and adults; and AED use. Offered fall, spring and summer semesters. HAT 300 - Topics in Athletic Training (4) - Study and discussion of topics related to the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Introduction to the organization and administration of athletic training programs. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of BOC Certified Athletic Trainers. Offered fall semester. HAT 357 - Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis I (4) - Study of the lower extremities as they relate to the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of BOC Certified Athletic Trainers. Offered spring semester. HAT 358 - Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis II (4) - Study of the upper extremities as they relate to the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered fall semester. HAT 359 - Practicum in Athletic Training (3) - Directed practicum in the professions of athletic training and sports medicine under the direct supervision of certified or licensed medical and allied health professionals. Previous practicum sites include: Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Houston Comets, Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine [New Orleans LA], Kate Grace Physical Therapy [San Diego CA], Memphis University School [Memphis TN], Sandra Day O’Connor High School [San Antonio TX], University of Georgia, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kansas Orthopaedic Center [Wichita KS] and Florida Hospital/RDV SportsPlex [Orlando FL]. Offered summer semester. HAT 360 - Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis III (4) - Study of the head, neck, face, thorax, abdomen and thoracic and lumbar spines as they relate to the prevention; clinical evaluation and diagnosis; immediate care and treatment; and rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered spring semester. HAT 454 - Organization and Administration of Athletic Training Programs(4) - Discussion of issues related to the organization and administration of athletic training programs. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered fall semester. HAT 455 - Pharmacology and Pathology in Athletic Training (3) - The study of acute and chronic illnesses and their response to, and impact on, physical activity. Discussion of pharmacologic agents used in managing these conditions. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered fall semester. HAT 456 - Rehabilitation Techniques (4) - Methods, theories and techniques in the rehabilitation of injuries. The clinical evaluation and diagnosis of injuries relative to rehabilitation. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered spring semester. HAT 457 - Therapeutic Modalities (4) - Current theories, methods and techniques in the application of therapeutic modalities during the treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries. The clinical evaluation and diagnosis of injuries relative to therapeutic modalities. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of Approved Clinical Instructors. Offered fall semester. HAT 458 - Seminar in Athletic Training (3) - Discussion of research techniques in athletic training. Review of specific competencies in athletic training. FIRST SEMESTER - FALL SECOND SEMESTER - SPRING SUMMER AFTER FIRST YEAR THIRD SEMESTER - FALL FOURTH SEMESTER - SPRING SUMMER AFTER SECOND YEAR FIFTH SEMESTER - FALL SIXTH SEMESTER - SPRING Each semester of the program includes clinical education experiences that are linked directly to the professional coursework. Students are assigned to a different clinical instructor each semester of program enrollment. In accordance with accreditation guidelines, clinical education assignments are designed to ensure the student exposure to diverse educational experiences through work with a variety of clinical instructors, patients, and allied medical and medical professionals in many different settings. Over the six semesters of program enrollment, students will spend a minimum of two semesters in the on-campus athletic training facilities and a minimum of one semester of clinical experience off-campus at a local high school and physical therapy/sports medicine clinic. Both of the first two semesters are spent in clinical assignments in the on-campus facilities. In addition to the fourteen on-campus clinical sites related to sports at The University of Alabama, the ATEP also utilizes The University of Alabama Student Recreation Center, eight high schools, six physical therapy/sports medicine clinics, one community college, one Division III college and three orthopaedic surgeons' offices as clinical sites.
