DESCRIPTION

Three hours  Introduction to the functional and aesthetic requirements of life spaces with emphasis on user needs and the home environment.  Prerequisites: none

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To provide an opportunity to satisfy personal design goals, using the designed environment as the means of achievement.  Criteria for selecting a life space are explored, along with an analysis of human needs.

To consider the aesthetics of furniture, materials, and the creation of interior spaces.  Manipulation of these aesthetics includes the selection, placement, suitability, and individuality of the various design elements, and how they contribute to the character of the interior space.

To provide laboratory experiences which introduce essential visual communications skills, and to apply theories of design and color to human environments.

To provide understanding of the interior design profession.

To follow the design process in solving simple and more complex problems.  This includes project definition, information collection, determination of the goals and objectives of users, analysis of specific project requirements, development of design solutions and evaluation for redevelopment, as well as establishing the idea of evaluation as a continuous process.

To develop a design vocabulary.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students are required to attend all lectures.

THREE ABSENCES are allowed without excuse.  Beginning with the FOURTH absence, the student’s final grade will be reduced ½ letter grade for each additional absence.

Students not in class on time are responsible for getting on the LATE roll.  THREE late arrivals will be counted as ONE absence and will earn a conference with me to examine the reason for lateness.

Students are responsible for acquiring all materials (handouts, notes, etc.) missed BEFORE returning to the next class.  It is recommended that you create an arrangement with another student to accomplish this end.

MAKE UP POLICY FOR EXAMS

Only two excuses are accepted in order to take a make-up exam:

            1. Written medical excuse or hospitalization

            2. Prior arrangement with instructor

Missed exams must be taken at the first scheduled CTD departmental make up period, (the responsibility for knowing that particular date lies with the student) or immediately following the missed exam with the instructor.

48 hours notice must be given to the instructor prior to the make up time.

Students registered with the Office of Disabilities

Please make an appointment with me as soon as possible to discuss any course accommodations that may be necessary.

Academic Misconduct Policy

All students in attendance at the University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and observe standards of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars.  The University of Alabama expects from its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to avoid discipline.  Violation of the honor code will result in penalties as severe as indefinite suspension from the University.
