COURSE DESCRIPTION

Using the latest computerized design systems, students create original designs, repeats, colorways and coordinates targeting specific markets.  Emphasis is on the creative use of advanced software, awareness of industry trends, and the development of an original portfolio of digitally produced designs.

OBJECTIVES

1.         To understand a textile designer’s approach to design, the design process and two-dimensional design fundamentals

2.         To learn to create designs specifically adapted to textile design

3.         To apply the elements and principles of design to textile design

4.         To learn the techniques used in the textile industry today

5.                  To use a hands-on approach to explore several textile design techniques

6.                  Acquire knowledge and skill in the use of computer hardware and software and the application to apparel and interior design and production

7.                  Demonstrate proficiency in computer-aided apparel and interior design applications

8.                  Demonstrate an awareness of the interrelationship of environment and man

COURSE POLICIES

COURSE POLICIES AND LABORATORY REQUIREMENTS

Regular class attendance is required. It is important to have your work in-progress checked by the instructor. It will be necessary to work on your projects outside of the scheduled class time. The computer lab located in Adams will be open for your convenience.  Check the computer lab schedule for days/times.


ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students are required to attend ALL classes.

 

1.      Be on time. Class will begin on time each day. Students who enter the classroom after class has commenced will be considered tardy. With only one classroom entrance, and a full classroom, late arrivals will cause disruptions. Please plan to be punctual.

2.      Be present. There are no free absences in this course. Please read the foregoing sentence again. You may miss class only for good cause. If you have any questions about the course requirements, please feel free to inquire. Please do not assume to your detriment.

 

THREE ABSENCES are allowed in this course [there are NO excused absences in this course].   Beginning with the FOURTH absence, the student’s final grade will be reduced 1 letter grade for each additional absence.  This course policy is NOT negotiable and will be strictly enforced. 

THREE late arrivals will be counted as ONE absence.  This course policy is NOT negotiable and will be strictly enforced. 

 

Every student is required to attend ALL classes. A student may miss class only for good cause, such as:

(a)     sickness which disables the student from attending class or poses a significant  threat to the health of others,

(b)  sickness of, or accident involving, a spouse or dependent, which requires the student to be with the spouse or dependent,

(c)  an accident which necessarily prevents the student’s attendance in class,

(d)  the death of a family member or friend,

(e)  an interview for an internship or for a permanent position after graduation, if the interview cannot reasonably be scheduled to avoid conflict,

(f)   a meeting or event at which the student must appear as a representative of the department, College or University, or

(g)  other good cause as is warranted under the circumstances.

 

(e)  deadlines for extra-curricular activities or other course assignments do not  constitute good cause for missing class.

 

 

If absent, you are responsible for acquiring all materials (handouts, notes, etc.) missed BEFORE returning to the next class.  It is recommended that you create an arrangement with another student to accomplish this end.    MISSED handouts must be picked up from the instructor by arrangement.

 

PERSONAL ELECTRONICS

No cell phones/beepers - turn them off before entering the classroom and, no personal music devices are allowed in the classroom.

MAKE-UP EXAMS/POP QUIZZES
Make-up exams will be given according to the departmental make-up exam schedule. Only one make-up exam may be taken per class in the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design. A make-up exam must be taken at the next scheduled departmental make-up exam time following the missed exam. It is the student's responsibility to check the date for the make-up exam.


There will
NOT be any make-up pop quizzes in this course.

LATE PROJECTS
Assignments turned in after the due DATE & TIME will NOT be accepted.

POLICY ON ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT
All acts of dishonesty in any work constitute academic misconduct. The Code of Academic Misconduct Disciplinary Procedures will be followed in the event that academic misconduct occurs. Students should refer to the Student Affairs Handbook, which can be obtained from the Student Life Office in the Ferguson Center.


EARLY ADMINSTRATION OF FINAL EXAM

The policy of The University of Alabama is to administer final examinations during the period designated as final exam week. The policy of The University of Alabama is not to allow the early administration of final exams. This policy will be enforced.

LABORATORY MAINTENANCE
Each student is responsible for keeping his/her desk neat and clean as well as participating in the overall lab clean up. The instructor is not responsible for lab clean up. If lab clean up becomes a problem, students will be assigned specific days & times to perform the lab clean up duties. 

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK IN THE LAB.

 

Students with disabilities need to register with the Office of Disability Services, 348-4285. After initial arrangements are made with that office, you are invited to schedule an appointment with me during my office hours to discuss accommodations and other needs you may have.
