NHM 201 NUTRITION IN LIFE CYCLE

Credit Hours:  3 hrs.

 

Course Description

Review of principles of nutrition; application of principles of basic nutrition to growth, development, and health.

 

Course Objectives

1. Relate nutrient functions to physiological changes throughout the life cycle.

 

2. Match the nutrients with their best food sources.

 

3. Use current dietary recommendation tables and guidelines to plan nutritionally balanced diets for people throughout the life cycle.

 

4. Recognize how nutrient needs change throughout the life cycle and the effects of age, sex, and activity levels on nutritional status during each stage.

 

5. Recognize how an individual's emotional needs as well as his/her socioeconomic, cultural, religious, and ethnic status are important determinants of food preferences and eating patterns.

 

6. Use various screening and assessment tools along with appropriate questioning and problem solving techniques to evaluate the diets of self and others and suggest appropriate intervention strategies.

 

7. Identify basic resources for nutrition care generally available in the community.

 

8. Use available computer software programs to analyze nutritional intakes and make appropriate recommendations based on those analyses.

 

9. Become familiar with current popular food items available in grocery stores and choices available in modified foods.
