CSM 401 CONSUMER PROTECTION

Credit Hours:  3 hrs.

 

Course Description

The study of laws and agencies affecting the consumer’s well-being, sources of consumer information and discussion of current consumer issues.

 

Course Objectives

•       present, debate and defend a given consumer issue related to the wellness of individuals, families and consumers

•       understand the history of the consumer movement and identify the forces that have shaped it.

•       analyze the nature of the basic seller/consumer relationship.

•       analyze the value judgments inherent in the solutions of consumer protection problems.

•       examine the impact of federal government regulatory activity on consumer protection.

•       identify the role and purpose of the major regulatory agencies at the federal, state and local level.

•       explore issues surrounding consumer redress.

•       examine a variety of current consumer issues.

•       decide where he/she stands on a given consumer issue and develop a written defense of a pro or con view on the issue.

•       understand the significance of professional ethics, etiquette and continued education.

•       understand the importance of building positive partnerships within business and industries and between consumers and community governmental bodies and advocacy groups.

•       analyze the role of the consumer affairs professional in decision-making and the importance of ethical behavior in this process.

•       examine a variety of current consumer issues in terms of global independence
