Consumer Science Graduate Studies

A master of science degree is offered through the College of Human Environmental Sciences where students may specialize in the Consumer Sciences (CSM) program.

Two options are available for graduate work in CSM.: Consumer Economics (thesis option) and  General Human Environmental Sciences with specialization in Family Financial Planning and Counseling (non-thesis option).  More information can be found at Graduate Required Courses.

Consumer Economics:

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. A minimum of 24 semester hours of course credit, including HES 509, two courses in statistics, and 15 hours in courses in the area of specialization are required. Students must complete 6 credit hours of thesis research and write a thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis, and a manuscript of publishable quality based on the thesis research is expected of each Plan I degree candidate.

General Human Environmental Sciences with specialization in Family Financial Planning and Counseling:

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. Students must earn 21 hours in courses in the area of family financial planning and counseling and 9 hours of electives in the area of specialization. All of the courses are available through distance education. The concentration in family financial planning and counseling has been registered with Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. Students who successfully complete the concentration will be eligible to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination that leads to the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, CFP® certification.

For both options, a grade of "B" or higher must be earned in all courses taken in the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Sports Management
The College of Human Environmental Sciences (CHES) and the College of Education (COE) have developed a graduate level emphasis in Sport Management at The University of Alabama. This collaborative arrangement offers students a cost effective, 36-hour degree program that can be completed from 15 to 24 months! The dynamic program of study will prepare students to become tomorrow's leaders in the sport industry.
