Course Description

Discussion and laboratory experience in individual health problems.

 

Course Objectives

        Describe the relationship between stress and disease.

        Discuss the major goals and objectives of the Healthy People initiative

        Explain the importance of personal decision making

        Describe the impact of gender, ethnicity and income on health status

        Explain the process of developing and maintaining relationships

        Describe guidelines for safe, responsible sexual behavior

        Identify the important elements of good prenatal care

        Discuss the social issues related to drug use and its prevention and treatment

        Explain how to make informed choices about foods

        Describe the many health benefits of physical activity

        Explain the health risks associated with excess body weight

        Describe the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease

        Discuss how cancer can be prevented, detected, diagnosed, and treated

        Describe methods to prevent infections and strengthen your immune system

        List strategies for protecting yourself from HIV and STDs

        Explain factors that contribute to violence and injuries
