NHM 457 CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Course Description

This course focuses on the physiological, genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that predispose children and adolescents to obesity; explores the clinical and public health strategies for treatment and prevention.

 

Course Objectives

1.       Describe the prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents

2.       Explain the significance of pediatric overweight and its relationship to adult overweight and chronic disease

3.       Describe the physiological, genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that predispose children and adolescents to obesity 

4.       Summarize guidelines for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity 

5.       Identify effective family, school, and community based interventions for the treatment and prevention of overweight among children and adolescents

6.       Describe policy and legislative approaches that address childhood obesity
