Internship Procedures

1.  Prospective Intern examines his/her career goals.  A discussion with student's academic advisor may be helpful in clarifying goals.  (See the departmental secretary if you don't know who your advisor is.)

2.  Student makes an appointment early in the semester at least two semesters prior to the internship with the internship coordinator.  Appointments are made through the departmental secretary and an "Application for HDFS Internship" form is acquired.

3.  Student then meets with the internship coordinator.  Completed internship form signed by an HDFS academic advisor is brought to appointment with internship coordinator and must include most recent cumulative GPA (acquired through departmental secretary) and hours earned.

Meeting with internship coordinator includes a discussion of:

  • Career goals

  • Internship goals

  • Possible internship sites

Internship sites include NAEYC accredited program or agencies.  Please see internship directory for possible sites.

4.  Student pursues contacts with possible internship sites and makes a follow-up appointment with internship coordinator to confirm the desired placement.

5.  Student makes an appointment with the supervisor of confirmed internship placement site to discuss:

    a) responsibilites, b) scheduling, and c) the first day of internship.

6.  Student attends the mandatory internship meeting at the end of the semester before internship to review internship requirements.

  • Internships are completed during the last semester of the student's program.

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required before an internship can be pursued.  An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for an off-campus internship.

  • Most internships are 6 credit hours.  Students may only register for 6 hours of classes during the internship semester.  To insure the student is well prepared, all major courses must be taken before the internship.
