Approximately, one in four students has had something taken from them by coercion.  These rates have been consistent over the past decade.  It must be remembered that the question does not limit itself to school grounds and that the information may be demonstrating coercion in the students’ communities.  Counselors and school administrators should do additional needs assessment to establish whether coercion is regular on school grounds.  Given the high reported rates, this is a priority area.  Since there are high reported rates of coercion, it is probable that retaliation will occur in some instances.  There is a high probability that some of these retaliations will occur on school grounds.  School administrators need to focus on policies, procedures and prevention programs to address these areas of need.

Forty-two percent of 9th and 10th grade Alabama students received violent threats over the past year.  This bullying behavior seems to be rising. There was a 4% increase among male students who received violent threats three or more times since the last AAS in 1998.  Bullying has been associated with a number of major violent killings on school grounds.  Clearly, there is great need for schools and communities to address these concerns.

As with the previous item, bullying data identifies an area of concern.  Thirty-six percent of 9th and 10th grade male students reported that they displayed bullying behavior, whereas only 22% of 9th and 10th grade males reported being a victim of a bully.  Eighteen percent of 9th and 10th grade female students reported that they displayed bullying behavior, whereas only 23% of 9th and 10th grade females reported being a victim of a bully.
