Mi Hello and Roll Tide! Welcome to the University of Alabama’s Department of Health Science in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. The Department of Health Science is nationally recognized for its programs in both Health Education and Athletic Training. We offer four degrees: the Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. in Health Education, and the Bachelor's in Athletic Training. Students enrolled in the Department of Health Science are able to work with faculty members known nationally for their expertise in teaching, research, and professional service. We take great pride in our commitment to working with undergraduate and graduate students in and out of the classroom. In 2000 and again in 2004 our Ph.D. Program in Health Education and Health Promotion offered jointly with UAB was ranked 7th in the nation among doctoral programs and our graduates have gone on to take leading roles at the Centers for Disease Control, major medical institutions and corporate industry, as well as achieving tenure at some of the finest universities and colleges. Our Masters in Health Studies via distance education has been in place for a decade with 450 students from all over the world who proudly call themselves UA graduates. This SACS accredited program has a nationally known faculty of health educators with over 100 years of experience who work one-on-one with UA distance graduate students. Our renowned Athletic Training Education Program is CAATE-Accredited and consistently attracts some of the brightest students in the university. On average, only 17 students are accepted into this rigorous program out of dozens of applicants, and graduates go on to work with professional sports teams, as well as college and high school sports teams across the country. The Department sponsors two student organizations: Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health science honorary and the Athletic Training Student Association, the student organization for Athletic Training majors. Student involvement in one's chosen field is important. If you choose the University of Alabama, I recommend that you become active in one of these outstanding organizations. I encourage you to take time and browse our departmental web pages for program and application information, as well as other UA websites to learn more about our great facilities such as our Student Recreation Center, the UA/Tuscaloosa community and much, much more. We always have time to communicate with anyone interested in our program. If you have questions or would like further information, feel free to contact me by telephone at (205) 348-2956 or through e-mail at mperko@ches.ua.edu |
