Qualifications for Graduate faculty membership
The purpose of the graduate faculty in the College of Human Environmental Sciences is to set standards for graduate work and to provide graduate instruction in the college. There are three categories of graduate faculty membership: Full, Associate, and Temporary. Only graduate faculty may teach courses numbered 500 and above and chair thesis and program committees. Only full members of the Graduate Faculty may chair Ph.D. program, concentration, and dissertation committees. Appointments of temporary members to the Graduate Faculty are limited to a maximum of one year but may be renewed at the end of the time period. To qualify for membership in the graduate faculty, a faculty member shall present evidence from the following considerations:
1. quality graduate level teaching skills;
2. sustained scholarly productivity;
3. quality supervision of students' research and scholarly activity; advising, mentoring, and developing professional careers.
It is the responsibility of Full and Associate Members of the graduate faculty to elect annually a representative to the Graduate Council, who acts for the faculty in matters relating to graduate work.
Standards for Graduate Faculty Membership
I. Full Membership- Candidates must:
A. Hold a doctorate in apparel/textiles, consumer sciences, human development/family studies, interior design, human nutrition/hospitality management, or health education or an appropriate degree in an allied discipline.
B. Hold the rank of at least Assistant Professor in a full time, tenure-track position.
C. Demonstrate ability and continuing interest in the graduate program. All of the following criteria will be considered. Candidates must show strengths in at least two of the following areas:
1. Quality supervision of graduate student research, as shown by successful completion of degree requirements.
2. Active participation on graduate thesis and dissertation committees.
3. Development and quality teaching of graduate courses.
4. Mentoring activities, including aiding students in preparing for the job market and finding employment and collaborating with students on joint publications and conference papers, etc.
D. Show evidence of a strong, continuing record of productive research, publication, or other scholarly activity. Evidence of refereed publication is required (at least two refereed publications, or equivalent creative activities, within the last five years) plus at least one of the following:
II. Associate Membership- Candidates must:

III. Temporary Membership- A faculty member can be recommended for temporary graduate faculty membership by the Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences under the following circumstances:
A. Faculty member has not yet obtained the Ph.D.
B. Faculty member does not hold a full-time or tenure-track position.
C. Faculty member does not have an active research program, but holds expertise in an area valuable for graduate instruction.
D. Faculty member has lost graduate faculty membership, but must continue to supervise existing graduate students until degree completion.
Terms of Appointment
I. Full Members. Full members are appointed for 6-year renewable terms.
II. Associate Members. Associate members are appointed for 6-year renewable terms. However, an Associate member may, after the third year, request a review for Full member status.
III. Temporary Members. Appointments of Temporary members will not exceed one calendar year, but are renewable.

If the Dean of the Graduate School does not approve an appointment, the faculty member may appeal to the Graduate Council's Committee on Graduate Faculty Membership, which will make the final decision on that application.
Transition Period
All current regular graduate faculty members will be continued as graduate faculty through Summer 1999. Those who wish to retain graduate faculty membership beyond Summer 1999 must be reviewed under the above criteria by the end of Spring 1999.

Review Process
- Candidates for appointment or continuation as a graduate faculty member shall submit application materials to the Dean's office during the spring semester preceding the academic year in which the candidate's appointment is due to expire.
- The application information will be reviewed by a faculty review committee composed of members of the Graduate Committee of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. In the event that there is an even number of gradate faculty on the Graduate Committee the Dean will appoint a member of the graduate faculty in the College to aid in the graduate faculty review process. The committee will have the responsibility of reviewing applications from faculty members applying for graduate faculty membership. The committee will also make recommendations relative to the appropriate level of graduate faculty membership of prospective faculty should an appointment be made. In requests for appointment to or continuation of Full Membership, the committee may recommend continuation or appointment to Full or Associate Membership or appointment to the undergraduate faculty. In requests for appointment to or continuation of Associate status, the committee may recommend continuation or appointment to that level to the undergraduate faculty.
- The Graduate Faculty Review Committee recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences who will consider the recommendation and information submitted by the applicant.
- The application and recommendation of the Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences will be forwarded to the Dean of the Graduate School.
Procedure for Appealing the Decision of the College Review Committee or Dean
- The candidate must be informed of each recommendation made at the divisional level and have an opportunity to supply an explanatory or rebuttal statement. Any such statement by the candidate must become a part of the application and is reviewed by the committee or dean as soon as possible.
- Following this review the candidate will be informed of the results and the application will be forwarded for review at the next stage.
- The candidate may terminate the review process at any stage by requesting that his or her application be withdrawn from consideration.
