what's happening in the college
Working through simulations, team activities and shared knowledge from industry professionals, a handful of faculty-selected upper level College of Human Environmental Sciences’ majors are taking part in the Crenshaw Leadership Academy. A highlight of the experience is a retreat which will be held on February 8 that features a keynote address from Mayer Electric Supply Chairman and CEO, Nancy Collat Goedecke.
Throughout the course of the academic year, CLA fellows participate in activities designed to hone their leadership skills. Fellows attend seminars, take part in discussions and team activities where they learn to think creatively, communicate effectively, motivate and influence others, act ethically, and use competent business and social etiquette skills. In November, they joined a United Way of West Alabama’s Young Leaders Society lunch and learn. Student teams also work together to research and develop a poster presentation in their area of study to be presented during the February 8 retreat. “Faculty have chosen a group of students who are already exceptional leaders. We are excited about the opportunities provided them as Crenshaw fellows which will further develop their leadership skills and for the benefits they will reap when they get into a competitive job market where such skills are highly valued.” said Darryl Thornton, CLA faculty leader and assistant professor at CHES. Established in 2005 by CHES Consumer Sciences faculty member, Jan Brakefield, the CLA was designed to provide a venue for leadership development for upper level CHES majors. The academy continued after Brakefield’s retirement and is funded annually by the CHES Leadership Board. The 16 outstanding Human Environmental Sciences majors who are participating in the 2019 Crenshaw Leadership Academy are Parker Carmichael of Schenectady, N.Y., Ryan Claunch of Tuscumbia, Ala., Jessica Dobkin of Airmont, N.Y., Mary Haddow of Germantown, Tenn., Bailey Hemphill of Lafayette, La., Tara Henderson of Mountain Brook, Ala., Sally Klimek of South Bend, Ind., Haley Kozon of Elberta, Ala., Spencer Lowery of Conyers, Ga., Melanie Marshall of Dallas, Texas, Annie Parks of Decatur, Texas, Linley Splawn of Birmingham, Ala., Kailyn Thomas of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Kaitlyn Towers of Gray, Ga., Kristen Travo of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Steven Ward of Parkville, Md. |
