Eta Sigma Gamma was invited to join the SCEC in its inaugural year last year as one of one of only six groups of students to have an office and storage space in the SCEC facility in Capital Hall. The SCEC, located within the Center for Community-Based Partnerships (CCBP) at Capital Hall, is designed to facilitate synergy and cross-disciplinary collaboration among student organizations and their community partners to address critical, community-identified needs. More than just a space, the SCEC is meant to give students a place to do real-world work and engage in a student-run environment that can develop genuine relationships with organizations in the Tuscaloosa community.
Among other things, this opportunity will allow HIH and ESG to:
- Work with the SCEC staff to develop an action plan for advancing their community engagement initiatives
- Annually assess and evaluate the impact of their project and partnership as a whole, as well as encourage individual members to respond to surveys that evaluate the overall impact of the SCEC
- Host a Coffee & Community session at least once during the academic year.
Anchor organizations are asked to re-apply for each academic year, and student organizations may choose to apply collaboratively which is exactly what HIH and ESG did. HIH president, Devin O’Neal, composed a compelling application and the organizations were awarded anchor organization status for the coming year. This is a great honor and privilege and shows once again that UA’s Center for Community Based Partnerships recognizes CHES students’ outstanding commitment to community engagement and public health.
