    Yummy Hawaii Internships

    4/26/2016

Peter Kim, a former Crimson Tide football player and founder of the Yummy Restaurant Group in Hawaii, offered our Restaurant, Hotels & Meetings Management students a chance to spend a month-long internship working in his restaurants and corporate office in Honolulu . A highly competitive group of interested students filled out applications and wrote 500 word essays in the hopes of winning one of the two coveted internships. We congratulate Megan Birkes and Kristina Osborn for being selected as the recipients of this marvelous opportunity. They will each be given round-trip airfare, lodging, and two meals a day plus, of course, the opportunity to work and learn first-hand from a successful restaurateur. We thank Peter Kim for his generosity and his commitment to students' success.

Megan Birkes is a rising senior from Orlando, FL. She is an RHM major with a concentration in Event Planning and is looking forward to getting to see the full picture of the industry from the back-of-house to the corporate office. She would like to work as a Hospitality Director on a cruise ship after graduating and eventually be able to mentor others in professional development.

Kristina Osborn is a rising senior from Latta, SC. She is also an RHM major but with a concentration in Hotels. She is eager to gain an understanding of how a corporate office operates and how they incorporate ideas into the workplace. She plans on pursuing a graduate degree and then is open to wherever the industry takes her.

We are proud of these two young women and wish them all the best. Aloha!

    Tee Time 2016 Fashion Show

    4/26/2016

CHES Apparel and Design students showcased their creativity during the annual Tee Time Fashion Show on April 19th. Students, mostly sophomores in the Apparel Production class, created one or two looks with a focus on sustainable design using alternative materials or re-purposed articles of clothing.

Twenty-one students participated: Meredith Anderson, Olivia Boswell, Dani Cole, Amanda Eidson, Marissa Fouladbakhsh, Effie Guenther, Emily Heath, Ashleigh Hill, Olivia Howe, Alexis Hughes, Kianna Kennamore, Lauren Lansdell, Alie Lowery, Brenna Marshall, Chelsea Morris, Madison Quattlebaum, Kaitlin Rease, Zoe Simpson, Talacey Stallworth, Sicong "Jasmine" Wang, and Chloe Whitney.

"It is an opportunity for the students to experience showcasing their designs to the public and going through the production of a fashion show," said Brian Taylor, instructor in apparel and design.

The event was held on the front lawn of Doster Hall with donations going to the Student Merchandising and Design Association. Video from the event is available on the CHES Facebook page.

    2016 Penny Allen AWard Recipient

    4/15/2016

A ceremony to honor the recipients of the Penny Allen Award was held April 14, 2016 in the Anderson Room at the Ferguson Center. The Sara Bell Penrod "Penny" Allen award, established in 1979, annually recognizes one student and one non-student who have made a significant contribution to student life at the University of Alabama. The award commemorates Penny Allen, a former professor of Social Work and chairperson of the Alabama Union Board of Governors and is intended to recognize those who value improving the quality of student life as she did.

Dr. Melvin Lewis, an assistant professor in the Sports Business Management Graduate program of the College of Human Environmental Sciences, was this year's non-student recipient. Joining him was his wife, Camisha, Dr. Milla Boschung, dean of the college, and Carla Hugg, the student who submitted the nomination. In her nomination, Ms. Hugg spoke, among other things, of Dr. Lewis' enthusiasm and encouragement, his positive attitude and the way he brings real-life experiences to the classroom. She spoke of his efforts to connect students with internships and with the professionals in various sports organizations. She described these efforts as invaluable.

Dr. Lewis certainly meets the criteria of outstanding leadership, service and dedication to students, and professional activity. We congratulate him on this achievement!
