    CHES Response To Racial Justice

    6/3/2020

A Message From Dean Stuart Usdan:

We share the country’s feelings of profound grief and revulsion at the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and too many others before them.

With a heavy heart, and in collaboration with the CHES committee for Diversity and Inclusivity (CDI) please know that our college is strongly committed to a culture of inclusion and equity but we can do more to ensure that our actions match our words.  In addition to continuing to provide programs that strive to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity, the committee is at work collecting new resources that our faculty and students can use for personal enrichment, classes, and community outreach.  As a human sciences unit within an institution of higher education, we have the power to change lives and instill within our students a sense of courage, respect, and dedication towards a more equitable society.

For many years, our college has tried to live by the creed of “improving lives” but in order to do this we must first come closer together as a community to create a safe and welcome environment.  We also recognize that people of color may be especially traumatized by the retelling of such racialized experiences. Please take care of yourself and let us know how we can help. We encourage everyone to utilize the resources provided by the UA’s Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion to learn how to be an effective ally.  If you feel you may need support do not hesitate to contact any of these UA resources: the UA Title IX office, University Counseling Center, Women and Gender Resource Center or the Employee Assistance Program.

These are certainly sad and concerning times for our country, and it is our great hope that we can heal from this and become a just and equitable world in which we all want to live. We can make a difference but only if we do so together.

Yea Alabama! 2018 was a hit at HES

    8/22/2018

    Picture
Students new to Alabama took a break in Monday’s Yea Alabama! event to visit their home schools. We welcomed our HES students to a Doster Hall Open House.

Dean Usdan spoke for a few minutes and posed for photos with the group. Then we moved the party inside for some much needed A/C and refreshments.

Students had a chance to visit with faculty members, advisors, current students and each other.  Activities included a get-to-know your department session, a student panel, a Snapchat scavenger hunt with prizes and games hosted by HES student organizations.

What a great way to kick off a new academic year!

Meet The New Dean of CHES

    6/5/2018

Picture of Stuart UsdanIncoming dean, Stuart Usdan
Dr. Stuart Usdan, who helped the College of Human Environmental Sciences make significant gains in graduate enrollment, research funding and infrastructure, has been named dean of the College. UA executive vice president and provost, Dr. Kevin Whitaker, made the announcement after a six month, nationwide search. Usdan’s appointment is effective July 1. He succeeds Dr. Milla Boschung who is retiring after serving as dean since 2003.

“Stuart is a strong academic leader with a respected research record and a firm commitment to teaching and service,” Whitaker said. “I’m confident he can build on the College’s many strengths while charting a bold and innovative course for the future.”

As dean, Usdan will be the chief academic officer for the College with oversight over all its academic programs and activities.

Usdan joined UA as an associate professor in 2005, earned tenure in 2008 and was named associate dean for graduate studies, research and assessment in 2010. He was promoted to professor in 2011 and has served as senior associate dean since 2014.

With extensive experience in the oversight of graduate academic programs and curricula, Usdan saw the College nearly double its graduate school enrollment over the last decade. He serves on UA’s Council of Associate Deans for Research, performing liaison functions between the vice president for research and the College’s faculty. As a member of the advisory board for the Alabama Life Research Institute, he facilitates and supports interdisciplinary research for this new university-wide institute.

During his UA tenure, Usdan has taught both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in various subjects including personal health, community health, principles of health promotion, research methods, public health policy and more. He was honored with the Joseph S. Rowland Teaching Excellence Award in 2014.

He has served on more than 65 student dissertation and thesis committees and is an active member of the American Public Health Association. He has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters and academic journal articles.

Usdan earned his bachelor’s degree in health sciences from the University of Arizona, his master’s degree in health promotion and behavior from the University of Georgia and his doctorate degree in health education and health promotion from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Prior to joining UA, Usdan served as an assistant professor at both the University of South Carolina and at Mississippi State University.

UA Students Design Room in Birmingham ShowHouse

    4/30/2018

Finding inspiration in a peacock feather pillow, 20 students from the College of Human Environmental Sciences transformed the blank walls of a bedroom and en suite bath into a soothing retreat in the 2018 Birmingham Decorators’ ShowHouse.

Members of Laurl Self’s interior design class CTD 426 were invited to showcase their talent in this year’s event. “The students have been so dedicated to the process. They began the weekend before classes started by attending the preview and measuring of the house. Then with a zero dollar budget, they worked hard acquiring the items for the space that maintained their design integrity. I am so proud of their hard work, their team work, and their design work,” says Self.
On March 28, UA student stylists moved furniture in, slipcovered a headboard, made the bed, hung drapes and art, and put the finishing touches on their assigned the space.

Two months of preparation took place before the final install. The class was divided into teams, each with different responsibilities. The "stylist" team was assigned installation work. Other teams made spreadsheets, the design board, handled logistics, resolved disputes and attended ShowHouse meetings.

The ShowHouse is an annual fundraiser hosted by the Symphony Volunteer Council to benefit the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The event kicked on Saturday, April 28 and is open through Sunday, May 13. House hours are Tuesday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The home is located on Cherokee Road with shuttle service to the house at 3405 Brookwood Road.
