New Online Guide for Preventing Substance Abuse in Early Childhood Years

    3/23/2016

    Dr. Liz RobertsonDr. Elizabeth Robertson
    Fox 6 (Birmingham) – March 14

Keeping children away from drugs and alcohol is a top concern for many parents. And while many people may think of this as a risk mostly in the teen years, a new online guide, authored by a University of Alabama professor, stresses the importance of preventing substance abuse in the early childhood years. Dr. Elizabeth Robertson, who is now Associate Dean for Research at UA’s College of Human Environmental Sciences, developed the online guide while she was working with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The guide outlines seven principles of substance abuse prevention, from the prenatal stage through age eight. In developing the guide, Robertson reviewed a great volume of research on the topic. Her main finding was that focusing on substance abuse prevention very early in life can have benefits for decades to come, even on other aspects of a child’s life.

    Spring Leadership Board

    3/21/2016

The HES Leadership Board was established in the spring of 2005 with the goal of bringing together alumni and friends of the College who wish to help support the students, faculty, and the programs of HES. The Board's semi-annual meeting was held on March 4, 2016 at the Child Development Research Center.

After a wonderful lunch and visiting with friends both old and new, the group was called to order by Leadership Board President, Mrs. Annie Hunter Galloway. University President, Dr. Stuart Bell, spoke to the group about his trip to Washington D.C. with our 2015 National Championship football team and Coach Nick Saban to meet President Obama.

Mrs. Amy Baker-Parton gave a development update and Dean Boschung spoke about the UA's Strategic Plan, the speakers for the Crenshaw Leadership Academy, and other current events and accomplishments of our college.

Mr. Daniel Womble, an athletic training student and Crenshaw fellow, thanked the group for their investment in students' lives and assured them their investment would not return void. Dr. Elizabeth Roberts spoke about her research on Preventing Drug Abuse Through Early Childhood Interventions and Dr. Linda Knol explained the new Culinary Medicine Initiative. Dr. Mary Kay Meyer told the group about plans for the new electronic edition of our cookbook, "Nothing But The Best".

Thanks to all who came from far and near on such a cold and dreary day!
