    RISE School 2016 Graduation

    8/18/2016

The Rise School graduation ceremony was held on July 28, 2016 at The Stallings Center on the campus of The University of Alabama. The theme this year was "Movin' & Groovin' to Big School" with the children participating in a variety of musical numbers revolving around modes of transportation. The audience enjoyed watching the students perform to songs such as "I Get Around", "Magic Carpet Ride"and "Car Wash". Afterwards, guest speaker, Bryan Raschilla, told of his family's wonderful experiences with the RISE Program. He assured parents that this year's graduates were indeed ready for the challenges of kindergarten and beyond because of the dedication of the RISE teachers.

The Laura Allison Harbin Award for Outstanding Achievement in the RISE Summer Teenage Volunteer Program was presented to Tana Early. The award was created in July 2001 after the Harbin family lost Allison instantly in a single-car accident in her sophomore year of high school. In Allison's words, "the kindness of one can have an effect on many". Her spirit lives on in the halls of RISE each summer as new volunteers continue her work.

Andi Gillen, Director of the RISE School, presented diplomas to each student. A reception afterwards for the graduates and their friends and families was provided by the Alabama Power Service Organization.

    2016 Penny Allen AWard Recipient

    4/15/2016

A ceremony to honor the recipients of the Penny Allen Award was held April 14, 2016 in the Anderson Room at the Ferguson Center. The Sara Bell Penrod "Penny" Allen award, established in 1979, annually recognizes one student and one non-student who have made a significant contribution to student life at the University of Alabama. The award commemorates Penny Allen, a former professor of Social Work and chairperson of the Alabama Union Board of Governors and is intended to recognize those who value improving the quality of student life as she did.

Dr. Melvin Lewis, an assistant professor in the Sports Business Management Graduate program of the College of Human Environmental Sciences, was this year's non-student recipient. Joining him was his wife, Camisha, Dr. Milla Boschung, dean of the college, and Carla Hugg, the student who submitted the nomination. In her nomination, Ms. Hugg spoke, among other things, of Dr. Lewis' enthusiasm and encouragement, his positive attitude and the way he brings real-life experiences to the classroom. She spoke of his efforts to connect students with internships and with the professionals in various sports organizations. She described these efforts as invaluable.

Dr. Lewis certainly meets the criteria of outstanding leadership, service and dedication to students, and professional activity. We congratulate him on this achievement!

    3/11/2016

Dean Boschung hosted a reception for the professional members of the musical, The Countess of Storyville, at the University Club on February 18, 2016. The musical, which came to the University of Alabama's Marian Gallaway Theatre is being produced by Tony Award winning commercial producer Margot Astrachan, who premiered the show at UA as part of its development process on the road to Broadway.
