The University of Alabama Board of Trustees has endorsed the appointment of Dr. Michael Stellefson as the Academic Chair in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. This 3-year appointment is designed to reinforce a faculty member’s existing research program and help CHES establish a robust nationally-recognized area of research. Dr. Stellefson has a highly visible program of scholarly research with a strong record of external funding. The appointment will strengthen his research efforts and also support a graduate assistantship. A professor in the Department of Health Science, his research focuses on disseminating analyses of public health data targeting diagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in disadvantaged adults with low socioeconomic status. He also seeks to understand how electronic media can increase health literacy in chronic disease populations where health disparities are the greatest. As Endowed Academic Chair of CHES, Stellefson’s responsibilities will include maintaining an active research program, producing an outstanding record of scholarly activity and seeking external funding to support a nationally-competitive research program. Stellefson will continue to teach, recruit, mentor, and advise students, as well as, lead interdisciplinary research teams and mentor junior faculty. Faculty scholars like Dr. Stellefson make significant contributions to the research and teaching missions of the University, and they increase national visibility of our College, which aids in attracting high-caliber faculty, excellent students and external research funding opportunities. Congratulations to Dr. Stellefson who has excelled in fulfilling the CHES mission of improving lives. |
